Michelle Shook is currently working on an extensive series of oil paintings entitled A Delicate Balance also lovingly known as "Oeuvre". In this series, Shook explores several women’s relationships to fertility and consumption, using the potent symbol and visual reference of the eggs of birds. The compositions and poses within the paintings will be dynamic since the input of the women involved has influenced the way in which the subject matter is conveyed A variety of eggs will be used (ostrich, bluebird, chicken, robin, etc.).

The project began in April 2002 with two initial paintings as well as sketches, and discussions with various women. Many more women continue to offer their input and have volunteered to become subjects for the paintings and have engaged in discussions of what emotions and ideas the symbolism of the egg evokes based on their personal experiences and their views on fertility and consumption.

Shook often exhibits paintings from this series as she completes them in order to get feedback as she continues expanding this body of work.
